Friends, this duck’s flippers are raised in alarm and are also a wee bit sweaty. Why? Because I was ready to witness a tale of deep romance paired with the baking of a life-sized gingerbread house. Instead, I saw more wood than gingerbread—and not in a sexy way. As for the romance, it was stiffer than the sugared house—also not in a sexy way.
A giant gingerbread house building contest should surely a place for fun, flair, and pondweed sandwiches, which in some ways it was, but honestly, when it came to fuzzy feelings, the leads mostly sank my rudder. Tia Mowry-Hardrict and Duane Henry do deserve a less wooden script, however.
There were some great moments. The film created a warm sense of found family, and the building of the house was flipper-ticklingly sweet. Also, a huge high-flipper for the movie’s racial diversity.
We did watch the whole movie, and the idea is super-original. The visuals were a ducking delight too. Sadly, at the end, when we’re all ready for that big romantic moment, it arrived with a bit of a dead-carp feel.
Happy New Year, ducky friends!
