The Day I Won $750 Because of Something I Dreamed

Friends, it’s been a sticky month, but here I am, ready to share a real-life psychic tale. J and I were in Vegas for a few days, and we didn’t intend on a gambling break. J had never been to Vegas, and we longed for a romantic break eating fancy nosh and watching Cirque de Soleil. Still, it was an extravagant vacation and we weren’t earning a heap at the time, so on the plane, I asked the universe for a nudge if there was a chance we might win some money.

In the hotel, a couple of days later, I woke from a strange dream: I was in front of a slot machine, pressing a big button. The button had the name “Lily Gamble” on it—Lily Gamble is a character from an episode of Poirot we used to watch all the time. When I pressed the button, I hit the jackpot. That was the dream.

When I told J about it, he went with the energy—this is one of the many reasons I love him so much. He said, “Well, why don’t we play on the slot machine that’s nearest to Lily’s Lounge? Worth a try, right?” Down we went to find this Lily’s Lounge restaurant, which, sure enough, was right next to a group of four slot machines called Heavenly Riches. I sat down and started to play.

Now, I’d heard that switching slot machines now and then is a good idea. (Something—possibly a myth—about machines being less likely to pay out the longer you sit in front of them.) So I played all four machines, just putting a little money on each, and only moving when it felt right to do so. Quite quickly, I started to win free games. They weren’t exactly financial wins, but they allowed me to keep playing without putting extra money in. And I won a lot of them. Every time I won a free game, I thanked the universe.

Long story short, on the fourth machine, after quite a few free games, I hit the jackpot. We won $750 and hadn’t gambled much at all.

Intuition is a beautiful thing. And I believe in a benevolent universe that is there for us if we choose to ask. At this time in my life, I was only beginning to believe in this kind of intuition. Now I not only trust it, but I also find it deeply romantic. The truth is, those few days in Vegas were some of the most romantic days we’ve ever spent together.

And if you haven’t seen Cirque du Soleil, those performances are simply AMAZING. ‘O’ was out of this world!

Hope you’re all well, friends!

About US

Welcome! I’m Star Tavares. I am queer and nonbinary, and I use they/them pronouns. My hubby Jake is LGBTQIA+ too. Our plush duck is called Duck and is super-ducking awesome. He likes to call himself an award-winning duck because we wrote a screenplay about him that won some awards, and who are we to argue?

The thing is, we used to publish in the romance genres, but after we came out, we thought romance didn’t want us anymore. But you know what, toots? We were wrong.

Now we’ve rebuilt our confidence and are back to living our Romancey Pants life, writing, reviewing romance movies, reading romance novels, and doing a whole lot of stretching. (Did I mention we’re getting older?)

Want to know more about Star’s writing credits? Under another name, Star has published romance stories, novels, and novellas with presses like Harper Collins and Cleis, and has won awards for their shorter works from the likes of Glimmer Train, Screencraft, and Narrative, where they also worked as an editor. More recently, Star’s nonfiction about gender identity has appeared in The New York Times and at Huffington Post Personal.

Since Jake, who is also a romance author, is starting to add more reviews here (along with Duck’s best frenemy Sir Mallard Jones) watch this space for more about him and his career.
