The Idea Of You (Amazon Prime) – Why The Duck Did We Enjoy This Movie?
Friends, it’s a simple plot. A forty-year-old woman, mother, and divorcee called Solene meets a young, stereotypically hot, and ultra-famous music star called Hayes. Big love ensues, as does MASSIVE mutual beak action … and the romantic conflict? Cruel societal attacks from ducks. No, wait. From *humans* of course. Continue reading

3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost (Hallmark) – A Review By Star and Duck
To be ducking honest, I was so super-ducking scared to watch a movie about a ghost that I got my flippers in a tangle, but once I’d settled in, my feathers were pleasantly tingled by this marvelously silly movie. See, in 3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost, Anna, a realtor (played by Julie Gonzalo) must… Continue reading

Puppy Love (Amazon Studios): A Movie Review by Duck And Star
Friends, when it comes to Puppy Love, it’s super-ducking strange for a duck to dig a film about dogs, but just because a movie star might *actually eat you* doesn’t make them less talented. And this cast, canines included, did a DUCK of a great job of making Puppy Love compelling. Even to a duck. Continue reading

Spring Breakthrough (Hallmark Mahogany 2023) Reviewed by Mallard and Jake
Jake: I know we’re excited to review Spring Breakthrough because we both loved the story and how the film featured an entirely Black cast, which is sometimes still hard to find on Hallmark Channel. Sir Mallard Jones: Yes. J: So, let’s give this movie a full five Diversity Ducks. SMJ: But we wouldn’t have minded… Continue reading

Love, Classified (Hallmark, 2022) Reviewed by Duck and Star
Friends, sometimes you watch a Hallmark movie and go, “Quacker-doodle doo! Hallmark was doing something super-ducking awesome here!” And that’s how it was with Love, Classified. I was so delighted that my quacks had that bubbly quality you get from a fine champagne. Continue reading

About US
Welcome! I’m Star Tavares. I am queer and nonbinary, and my hubby Jake is trans. Our plush duck is called Duck and is super-ducking awesome too. He likes to call himself an award-winning duck because Jake and I wrote a screenplay about him that won some awards, and who are we to argue?
The thing is, we used to publish in the romance genres, but after we came out about our genders, we thought romance didn’t want us anymore. But you know what, toots? We were wrong.
Now we’ve rebuilt our confidence and are back to living our Romancey Pants life, writing, reviewing romance movies, reading romance novels, and doing a whole lot of stretching. (Did I mention we’re getting older?)
Want to know more about Star’s writing credits? Under another name, Star has published romance novels and novellas with presses like Harper Collins and Cleis, and has won awards for their shorter works from places like Glimmer Train, Screencraft, and Narrative, where they also worked as an editor. More recently, Star’s nonfiction about gender identity has appeared in The New York Times and at Huffington Post Personal.
Since Jake, who is also a romance author, is starting to add more reviews here (along with Duck’s best frenemy Sir Mallard Jones) watch this space for more about him and his career.
