Friends, a duck like me always enjoys a good romance audiobook, and Snowed In With The Billionaire by Caroline Anderson did my beak-holes proud. I dived into this Harlequin Romance, hoping for a narrative filled with the passion of a double pondweed burger [ed. which is a good thing] and that’s just what I got.
The truth is, Anderson is a dab hand at dialogue, and while my flippers are often put off by a dialogue-driven story, I admit it didn’t take long for Anderson’s pond to swallow my feathers in the best of ways. Her dialogue’s realistic without being too realistic. It flows well and is playful, thoughtful. Also, this second-chance novel with a snowed-in trope was deftly narrated by Christine Williams, and the Christmassy feel was delightful, as was the softly building romance.
But for heaven’s sake, people, why can’t humans actually ducking talk to each other, rather than skulking around, hiding their feelings for almost the entire ducking book? At times, I found myself bobbing among the weeds, wondering if anyone was going to be brave enough to actually QUACK about what went wrong in the past! As it happens, this is the very conversation that brings the novel to its delightful conclusion, so the wait was well-worth this duck’s while.
Now, my only other small gripe is with Williams’ narration of protagonist Georgia’s lines. This duck found this character’s vocal tone a little cute and samey—just not my vibe when it comes to audiobooks. That said, I listened to the entire audio with a spring in my flippers and a goldfish under my hat—which is to say it was super-ducking awesome!
Diversity? Well, the book’s from 2013, and there aren’t many characters, but those that exist seem to be white, cis, het. But look, the story features a strong, capable female lead, and it kept my human completely rapt. A full four “flippers up” from me!
