Here’s the premise of The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango: Detective Bailey (Lacey Chabert), who prefers to work alone, is sent undercover at a ballroom dancing contest to solve a murder. In order to dance convincingly, she must partner up with dancer “husband” Sebastian Moore Continue reading

Coupling (UK TV Series) – Reviewed by a Duck and a Human

Duck: Whatever else Coupling is, it’s flipper-ticklingly funny! This old Brit show about six folks who become friends when two of them start to date quacks me up every time. Star: It’s true! I can’t NOT quacker-laugh at Coupling. Especially the three series that include Jeff (played by Richard Coyle). Coyle appears as Jeff in Continue reading

Hit Man (Netflix) – A Review by a Duck and a Human

Duck: Hit Man was a duck of a lot of fun, Star! The plot: A fake hit man (played by Glen Powell) who lures criminals for the police falls for a woman (played by Adria Arjona) who almost “hires” him to take someone out (meaning murder, not a pizza date). She believes he’s a real Continue reading

The Idea Of You (Amazon Prime) – Why The Duck Did We Enjoy This Movie?

Friends, it’s a simple plot. A forty-year-old woman, mother, and divorcee called Solene meets a young, stereotypically hot, and ultra-famous music star called Hayes. Big love ensues, as does MASSIVE mutual beak action … and the romantic conflict? Cruel societal attacks from ducks. No, wait. From *humans* of course. Continue reading

Just Add Romance (Hallmark) Reviewed by Duck and Star

Friends, sometimes a duck starts watching a Hallmark movie just to give it a five-minute “try,” fully expecting he’ll end up giving it the Flipper, but then he watches the whole ducking thing as easily as pondweed pie. That’s how it was with Just Add Romance. My beak-holes were firmly glued to the screen all… Continue reading

Two Tickets to Paradise reviewed by Duck T.

Friends, flippers up for a movie where the characters actually sort things out! Is it just me, your goldfish-guzzling friend, who finds it irritating when things just “fall into place” between the romantic heroes without any quacking (or other communication) about everyone’s mistakes? Well, welcome to paradise because in Two Tickets to Paradise, the main… Continue reading

Butlers In Love (Hallmark) Reviewed by Duck T.

Friends, the word “butling,” (the art of being a butler,) is brand new to my beak-holes, and I learned it from Butlers In Love starring Stacey Farber and Corey Cott. These actors did a flipper-tickling job of playing Emma and Henry, two students at a highly elite butler academy. Not only was there a duck… Continue reading
About US
Welcome! I’m Star Tavares. I am queer and nonbinary, and I use they/them pronouns. My hubby Jake is LGBTQIA+ too. Our plush duck is called Duck and is super-ducking awesome. He likes to call himself an award-winning duck because we wrote a screenplay about him that won some awards, and who are we to argue?
The thing is, we used to publish in the romance genres, but after we came out, we thought romance didn’t want us anymore. But you know what, toots? We were wrong.
Now we’ve rebuilt our confidence and are back to living our Romancey Pants life, writing, reviewing romance movies, reading romance novels, and doing a whole lot of stretching. (Did I mention we’re getting older?)
Want to know more about Star’s writing credits? Under another name, Star has published romance stories, novels, and novellas with presses like Harper Collins and Cleis, and has won awards for their shorter works from the likes of Glimmer Train, Screencraft, and Narrative, where they also worked as an editor. More recently, Star’s nonfiction about gender identity has appeared in The New York Times and at Huffington Post Personal.
Since Jake, who is also a romance author, is starting to add more reviews here (along with Duck’s best frenemy Sir Mallard Jones) watch this space for more about him and his career.
