“Like A Cat Up A Palm Tree Who’s Decided To Go Up A Palm Tree”: The Genius of Jamie Dornan in Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar

Friends, there are certainly things I enjoyed about Fifty Shades of Grey, but neither the book nor the film was earth-shattering for yours truly. As for the film, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson did a good job of building that chemistry, I thought. But when it comes to Jamie Dornan, let me be clear about one thing:

In Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, he is EVERYTHING.

Frankly, the whole romantic comedy is JUST MY BAG. Every time I watch it—and I watch it A LOT—I am laughing myself purple at every turn. I could go ON AND ON about how FUNNY and ADORABLE the stars Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are in this movie, and how many times the romance is just so refreshing. The friendship is valued WAY above the romance, which is also delightful, and I’ve never seen another film where a female protagonist tells her new lover after sex that yes, she finally gets it! Meaningless sex just feels good physically! This is what Star tells Edgar, while he in turn is waxing lyrical about how emotionally attached he is to their lovemaking. Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, on behalf of my gender politics, thank you for this moment!

But NOTHING can prepare us for the sheer comical genius and UTTER RIDICULOUSNESS of love interest Edgar, who is played by Jamie Dornan. He is HILARIOUS. Thank duck he got to showcase his comedy skills in this movie. Take a look at his heartbreak song, which in case you were wondering, features that cat I mentioned in the post title:

How can I follow that with anything smileworthy? I just can’t. If you haven’t seen Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar and you love the sound of it, you’re going to have to watch it. Here’s the link!

About US

Welcome! I’m Star Tavares. I am queer and nonbinary, and I use they/them pronouns. My hubby Jake is LGBTQIA+ too. Our plush duck is called Duck and is super-ducking awesome. He likes to call himself an award-winning duck because we wrote a screenplay about him that won some awards, and who are we to argue?

The thing is, we used to publish in the romance genres, but after we came out, we thought romance didn’t want us anymore. But you know what, toots? We were wrong.

Now we’ve rebuilt our confidence and are back to living our Romancey Pants life, writing, reviewing romance movies, reading romance novels, and doing a whole lot of stretching. (Did I mention we’re getting older?)

Want to know more about Star’s writing credits? Under another name, Star has published romance stories, novels, and novellas with presses like Harper Collins and Cleis, and has won awards for their shorter works from the likes of Glimmer Train, Screencraft, and Narrative, where they also worked as an editor. More recently, Star’s nonfiction about gender identity has appeared in The New York Times and at Huffington Post Personal.

Since Jake, who is also a romance author, is starting to add more reviews here (along with Duck’s best frenemy Sir Mallard Jones) watch this space for more about him and his career.
